Patna: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar recently chaired a high-level meeting to discuss rising crime graph and directed officials to monitor the performance of police stations so that remedial measures could be taken.

The state government has been under attack after the spike in murders in the past four months, forcing the Opposition parties to raise the issue of deteriorating law and order situation in the state Assembly.

According to RJD’s leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav, “Criminal activities have increased after Nitish Kumar formed a government with BJP in Bihar. Nitish Kumar is silent because NDA is in power and he knows that he can’t blame his allies for the situation”.

“”Jungle raj has returned to haunt people,” he said.

The Opposition alleged businessmen and political rivals were  are being killed due to vendetta politics.

The allegation levelled by Opposition parties was, however, dismissed by the police department as well as the state government.

According to deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi, “There are laws to deal with criminals. Police have been taking tough measures and criminals are being arrested so the allegation that the state government is not performing is baseless.”

In 2016, after Nitish Kumar had imposed a blanket ban on liquor consumption, Bihar police statistics had shown a decline of 25.36 percent in the overall crime rate.

The RJD, however, claimed that in the past few months 527 cases of murder and around 111 robberies have been reported from various districts.

The maximum number of murder cases was reported from state capital Patna. Data shows that 117 people have been killed in Patna district in the past four months.

Observers are of the view that there was fall in the rates of murder and robberies between 2005 and 2013 when Nitish Kumar was with NDA but crime graph increased in the later years.

One of the most gruesome incidents which rocked the state in recent times was the murder of four volleyball players in Bhagalpur district. The victims were lured to play a volleyball championship match on November 13 when they were murdered after being offered alcohol in the dry state.

Earlier this month, two businessman were killed in one day in two separate incidents in Patna and Vaishali district. In Sept., the owner of a cinema hall in Patna’s Bihta area was shot dead by unidentified assailants. In October, five men abducted and gang-raped a 13-year-old girl in Nawada district.

An aide of an independent MLA Baby Kumari was murdered in Muzaffarpur district in July.

Besides, four more high profile political murders rocked the state after JD (U) - BJP formed a government in July this year. There was a strom over the killing of Congress party leader Sonu Jaiswal in Motihari on Nov. 2.
