34,600 rapes in India, Madhya Pradesh most unsafe

As many as 34,600 cases of rape were reported from across the country with Madhya Pradesh and Delhi leading the list of states and Union territories respectively that reported the most number of rape cases. According to the crime data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the year 2015, Madhya Pradesh reported 4,391 rape cases, while the national capital registered 2,199. Maharashtra reported 4,144 rape cases.

Nearly 3.27 lakh cases of crimes against women were reported across the country. Of these over 1.3 lakh were sexual offences — 1.2 lakh in states and 9,445 in Union territories. The sexual offences cases included rape, attempt to rape, assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty and insult to the modesty of women.

Of the total sexual offences against women, Maharashtra reported the highest number with 16,989 cases. Madhya Pradesh reported 12,887 and Uttar Pradesh 11,343.

Delhi leads again in the Union territories list with 9,104 cases of sexual offences against women being reported in the capital, followed by 164 in Chandigarh, 98 in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, 47 in Puducherry, 13 in Dadar and Nagar Haveli, 12 in Daman and Diu and seven in Lakshawdeep.

The most number of murder cases were reported from UP with 4,732 cases, while Bihar registered 3,178 cases. In addition, a total of 30 cases of sedition were recorded from across the country with as many as nine being reported from Bihar.

There was a decrease of 4.7 per cent in crimes against scheduled tribes. While 11,451 such crimes were reported in 2014, in 2015 it went down to 10,914.
