Madam Secretary is a political drama that follows Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord as she navigates the White House and balances her life at home. Actor Geoffrey Arend plays her speech writer Matt Mahoney, and seems perfect for the role as he essays the quirks and intelligence of Matt with ease.

“Matt is a typical witty guy who wants to do the right thing,” he begins. “This year, my character revealed that he is half-Pakistani and I will be portraying the ups and downs of being a Pakistani-American. It’ll be interesting to see his growth from here on out,” he says.

With a show such as this, where drama and nerves are constantly high, it is imperative that a cast bonds well. Geoffrey speak highly of the cast and crew, “The cast is absolutely beautiful and wonderful. We sing and dance a lot! I’ve acted with Bebe Neuwirth before and now, getting to be in scenes with her — it’s exactly the same. Tea Leone who plays the lead is just one of the smartest and coolest people I know. Unfortunately, I haven’t been in any scenes with Tim Daly but he’s great too.”

Having acted in several movies like (500) Days of Summer and Devil as well as TV series like Body of Proof, which does he prefer “I love theatre the most, actually. I enjoy interacting with an audience because you can feel their energy and alter your performance accordingly. Television is a more packed schedule; you have to either keep up or get left behind. I don’t even know where Matt Mahoney is going. But with movies you have a beginning and an end.”

Geoffrey also speaks of the next season and the spirit of the show, “I wanted to be a part of this political show amongst the many there are, because of the spirit behind it. It operates on the kernel of hope that things could be better. It also portrays the dark side of human desire which I think, to a viewer, is fascinating and exciting. I think our show deals with that really well. As for my character, the writers don’t tell me what is going to happen next so I really don’t know.” Guess we’ll just have to wait, then
