A gritty India won the third and final hockey test against Australia 3-2 in Raipur, but lost the series as the final outcome was decided via a penalty shootout (2-3).

With the hosts’ win on the day, the series was locked 1-1with one draw. The teams were also level on goal count — both having scored seven each — and thus the shootout came into play.

The first match was a 2-2 draw, while Australia won the second game 2-1. In the shootout, the visitors converted both their opening chances, while missed shots from skipper Sardar Singh and striker Akashdeep Singh had the hosts on the back foot.

India goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh stood tall and effected two brilliant saves to bring the team back into the game. The teams were level 2-2, as Birendra Lakra and Rupinderpal Singh were on target.

A clever strike from Chris Ciriello put Australia ahead again, while V.R. Raghunath missed out at the crucial moment to hand the visitors the series win.

Earlier, Akashdeep’s 60th-minute strike had helped India notch the final test that was played on a fast pace.
