Vaginal muscles tighten as a natural reflex to effects of anxiety on the mind.

Stress, depression, anxiety and various mental health issues that threaten the sound functioning of the mind can also spell doom for a person’s sex life as they directly affect a person’s sex drive. In men this may lead to erectile dysfunction but in case of women, it can cause much more than just a loss of interest in sex.

While sexual intercourse is a source of immense pleasure, a lot of women can find it an extremely painful experience and that often proves to be a reason behind women abstaining from sex. A research showed that the number of women complaining about pain during sex was found to be 30%.

This pain is actually an effect of anxiety on the sexual behaviour of women and therapist explain it by mentioning that effect of the ailment can cause vaginal muscles to tighten and make penetration impossible. When women try to have intercourse in such a state, there is unbearable pain.

The taboos and shame associated with sexual disorders has prevented a lot of women from talking about it and the anxiety and depression just adds to the reluctance in addressing something seen as a weakness. For this reason some women have been seen as staying away from sex for as long as 12 years.

Apart from therapy, the issue can be solved by anti-depressants, warm baths, breathing exercises and heating pads, which are additions to the process called progressive desensitisation.

Anxiety is also responsible for vaginal dryness which is when women find it difficult to experience arousal creating obstacles for required lubrication.
