‘Diverse’ was the word of the day at the 70th EMMY awards held in Los Angeles. The biggest TV awards in the world played host to a particularly dynamic group of actors, directors, producers and writers acknowledging the lack of diversity in mainstream TV shows over the years, vowing to bring about change with roles for actors from all ethnicities.

Sartorially speaking however, both fashion critics and viewers seemed happy with the fashionable choices from some of their most beloved TV personalities. Tracy Ellis Ross — known for her role on the comedy ‘Blackish’ was a delight in Indian (rani) pink from French couture king Valentino. Her voluminous off-shoulder gown was so dramatic it reminded us of Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress.

Other female actors and winners that shone in vibrant hues included first-time winner Rachel Brosnahan (‘The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel’) in a one-shoulder red gown from Oscar de la Renta, Regina King in neon lime-green by Christian Siriano and Thandie Newton in a pink gown by Brandon Maxwell (‘Westworld’). The leading men were also clued in on the colour trend with singer John Legend, Max Minghella (‘The Handmaid’s Tale’) and Joe Keery (‘Stranger Things’) in blue jackets and suits.

Sartorialists were also treated to some unexpected prints on the red carpet with Milly Bobby Brown (‘Stranger Things’), Connie Britton and Emilia Clarke (‘Game of Thrones’) sporting floral prints and embellishment on their beautiful dresses.

The lovely Connie Britton—known for her roles in ‘Friday Night Lights’ and ‘American Horror Story’ among others was wearing a lovely V-necked gown by India-born designers Sachin & Babi. It has to be said that red carpet at most award shows these days are full of beautiful but conservative designs.

The fashion risk takers seem to be heading to the annual Met Gala. And whilst several upcoming designers must be delighted to have their designs showcased on this global platform, it were the original couture houses Valentino, Dior and Oscar de la Renta that truly stole the show with their exquisite craftsmanship.
