Mumbai: Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray-led Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to make Ajay Devgn starrer ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ tax-free on Wednesday. The movie has depicted the valour of a 17th century Maratha military leader Tanaji Malusare from Konkan region of Maharashtra.

The film, based on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s trusted lieutenant who played a pivotal role in capturing the Kondana Fort (now known as Sinhagad Fort), located near Pune, has grossed over `150 crore at box office since release on January 10.

An official from the chief minister office (CMO) said, “The proposal for exempting the film from entertainment tax was approved in the Cabinet meeting.”

The state government will be waiving off the state GST (SGST), which was earlier called ‘entertainment tax’.

According to the Cabinet decision, after a movie is declared tax-free by issuing a Government resolution (GR), cinegoers need not pay SGST on the ticket. The amount will have to be borne by theatres. The state GST paid by theatres till April 30, 2020 will be refunded to them.

Along with the chief minister, revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat and women and child welfare minister Yashomati Thakur, had also said the issue was discussed in the Cabinet meeting last week, where ministers were unanimous about making the film tax-free.

Besides the ruling party leaders, BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis had also demanded SGST exemption on the movie.
