All we can say is that it’s sad to see one of the industry’s leading directors be tied down by stereotypes.

After delivering three hit costume dramas back-to-back — Ram-Leela, Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat—Sanjay Leela Bhansali is under immense pressure to make his next directorial venture yet another one of the same. Sources say that though he would like nothing better than to move away from what’s become his signature tune, his co-producers are insistent on having him make another controversial costume drama replete with songs and dance sequences and other Bhansali tropes.

Says a source close to the director, “SLB wants to venture into a genre that he has never attempted before and make a contemporary comedy. But chances are that the swords and sabres will be brought out again because that’s what seems to get the coin tinkling at the box office.”

Rumour has it that Bhansali’s next film may also feature the lead pair from his last three films — Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh. All we can say is that it’s sad to see one of the industry’s leading directors be tied down by stereotypes.
