Taking a pledge to clean the Yamuna river in the next 36 months, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal conducted first-ever Yamuna aarti on Friday evening.

Taking a pledge to clean the Yamuna river in the next 36 months, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal conducted first-ever Yamuna aarti on Friday evening.

Mr Kejriwal, along with his Cabinet colleagues and senior Delhi government officials, took part in the “Yamuna Aarti” held at the Kudesia Ghat, near ISBT.

He said Yamuna river was not clean but today a very big start has been made, and added, his government was taking several steps to improve condition of the river.

“Discharge of untreated water and industrial effluents into the river Yamuna will be strictly prohibited. There will be a close and strict monitoring of all industries that discharge water into the river. Most of the pollution happens at night while the current monitoring happens during the day only. All effluents into the river shall be monitored round the clock. No untreated water, whether industrial or domestic sewage, will enter Yamuna,” Mr Kejriwal said at the event which also saw cultural performances.

The Delhi government will make Yamuna aarti a regular feature in a bid to rejuvenate the river. The aarti will also be conducted at Gita Ghat. Mr Kejriwal said that the people need to feel connected with their river and to make that happen multiple events have been organised around it.

“We have already conducted a Kayaking and Canoeing Championship near Wazirabad and will host musical events and festivals soon to ensure that people remember and love their river. It is only when the city owns its river, pledges to work for it and ensures their personal commitment to clean it, will we have a clean and nourishing river,” he added.

Water minister Kapil Mishra said that the AAP government has extended use of natural infrastructure as well to achieve “nirmal Yamuna”.
