Woman’s body found in a box

Body of a woman in her thirties discovered was from inside a box near a drain in northeast Delhi’s Seelampur area on Tuesday morning. The woman has not been identified as yet.

The recovery of the box has spread fear in the locality. Preliminary investigations point to the fact that the woman was murdered in her house and then her body was thrown in the drain after being kept in the box. Robbery seems to be the motive behind the incident, said the police.

According to a senior police officer, the police received a call about the discovery of the box at about 11.45 am on Tuesday when MCD sanitation workers found the box lying near a drain. A team from local police station reached the spot and when the box was opened, they found the body inside.

“Despite repeated attempts she could not be identified,” said a senior police officer, adding, “We have spread the word in other police stations as well. Besides we checked the missing complaints in nearby police stations about the woman, but could not identify her as yet.” The body has been sent for autopsy and its results are awaited after which the exact cause of death would be known.

A case of murder has been registered at the local police station against unknown persons and further investigations are on.

Investigating officials said that the woman was wearing nightwear suggesting that she was victimised while she was asleep. “It seems to be a case of robbery and murder,” said the investigating officials, adding, “We are trying to ascertain whether she was sexually assaulted as well.”

The police said that the MCD officials who spotted the body are being questioned even as CCTVs in the surrounding areas is being checked.
