On the second day of the Delhi University admissions on Friday, Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia said that students from the city should be given preference over those from other states for admission to the Central university.

Mr Sisodia said that the number of students passing Class 12 is increasing in Delhi every year but the number of seats in the varsity remains the same. “Due to this disproportionate students-to-seat ratio and huge influx of students from other states, a huge chunk of students in the National Capital have to opt for private universities,” he said.

He suggested that Delhi students could be given preference in three ways, “They could be offered some percentage relaxation over students coming from other states They could be given some quota during the admission process, or they should be preferred for admissions to colleges funded by the Delhi government,” he said. Demanding preference to be given to students for obtaining admission in DU who have passed Class 12 from the National Capital, senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member Vijay Goel met Union HRD minister Smriti Irani with a delegation.

The delegation has put forward three demands. First, there should be an entrance test for Delhi university so that meritorious students get admission and students who obtain admission through unfair practices are discouraged. Secondly, there should be 85 per cent reservation for Delhi students in the 12 DU colleges which are completely funded by the Delhi government. Thirdly, relaxation of 5 per cent in the cut-off list should be provided to Delhi students while applying for DU colleges.

“Ms Irani told the delegation that despite Delhi University being a Central university, the HRD ministry has no role in its functioning. This issue needs to be resolved by the Delhi University and Delhi government only,” said Mr Goel.

Mr Goel further said that he would again speak with the DU vice-chancellor Yogesh Tyagi as well as Delhi’s education minister Manish Sisodia regarding this issue.
