Disabled children studying in schools run or aided by the Delhi government will now get personal attention with the Kejriwal government asking special educators to prepare individualised education programme (IEP) for them.

According to the department of education, the move is likely to help around 20,000 disabled children.

“Special educators have been asked to prepare an individualised education programme for every disabled child under their care,” a senior official of the directorate of education (DoE) said. The special education teachers have been asked to prepare the programme within 15 days.

The personalised attention programme will focus on education and extra-curricular activities of the differently-abled children, according to the senior official.

“Teachers will have the liberty to modify any child’s module as per requirements,” the official said and added that special attention will be given to brush up children’s language skills and physiotherapy needs.

The educators will set both short-term and long-term goals for each child, according to the directorate of education. The department officials had recently formed seven working in association with various NGOs working for children with special needs.

The working groups will work on training modules for special educators, tools to measure learning disabilities, teaching aids and regional centres for the severely disabled children to access specialised help.
