In a major water conservation initiative, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation has started using recycled water in around 6,500 parks in its jurisdiction. According to the SDMC Leader of House, Ashish Sood, the corporation has been trying to use an alternate, recycled water in this case, to keep parks green after a ban was imposed on the use of borewell water for this purpose.

Mr Sood said that the SDMC is concentrating on the maintenance of 6,416 parks spread over 1,846 acres by taking this unique step to utilise recycled water in a large quantity.

Under the initiative, on Sunday, one of the parks under ward number 118 in Janakpuri was renamed Lotus Park with an aim to give a new look to the park and enhance greenery. Local Lok Sabha member Parvesh Verma was the chief guest at the function.

“The SDMC parks have helped Delhi in getting its ‘Green City’ recognition. The SDMC has started giving special attention to the maintenance of the parks and this needs to be appreciated. The parks not only facilitate children to play and grow but also help in keeping the residents, including the elders, fit apart from functioning as the oxygen pipeline for one and all,” said Mr Verma.

Mr Sood explained that the SDMC has been trying the alternative of recycled water for making parks green after the ban was imposed on the use of borewell water for this purpose. A number of small effluent treatment plants (ETPs) have been installed near the drains to provide recycled water in the parks.

“Recently a major hotel in Vasant Kunj has started releasing one lakh litres of recycled water for free from its ETP for the parks of the SDMC around Vasant Vihar. More such hotels are being brought under the ambit with similar MoUs with the SDMC. The corporation is in the process of setting up open gyms in the two parks under each ward. The corporation has been working overtime to accelerate the process of development in its entire area,” added Mr Sood.
