In attempt to manage 2,400 metric tonnes of daily waste at its landfill site, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation has inducted two advanced hydraulic-operated bulldozers and two new excavators for levelling and dressing up the construction waste being dumped there. The SDMC has taken up the issue of allotment of additional land with the DDA as the sanitary landfill site at Okhla, started in the year 1996 over an area of 32 acres, has become overburdened with 600 metric tonnes of garbage, 500 MT malba, 600 MT silt and 500 MT ashes.

The Okhla sanitary landfill site is fast becoming the highest mound of around 160 feet above ground level. The new machines have been purchased for around Rs 3 crore.

SDMC mayor Shyam Sharma said the corporation acted swiftly in purchasing the new machines in the shortest possible time. “With the induction of the modern machines, the corporation will be able to give more thrust to the cleanliness under Swachchh Bharat Mission,” added Mr Sharma.
