Scores of students led by National Students’ Union of India on Sunday marched to home minister Rajnath Singh’s residence demanding a court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case of varsity student Najeeb Ahmed, who has been missing from campus since a week.

“It is such a shame that it took the minister of home affairs (MHA) five days to announce the setting up of an SIT,” NSUI president Amrita Dhawan said in a statement.

“Why is the identity of members of the SIT not disclosed It is the very same ideology that has been accused for this incident that is running the ministry,” she said.

The incident has led the campus to be on boil yet again with the agitating students keeping vice- chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar and other senior officials under siege for over 20 hours alleging inaction on the administration’s part.

Following protests by students, the home minister had directed Delhi police to set up an SIT to trace the missing student.

“We have strong reasons to believe that the ministry will shield the culprits and so, we demand setting up of a court monitored SIT with time bound investigation,” Ms Dhawan said.

She further said the office bearers of NSUI will also meet the lieutenant-governor of Delhi on Monday to discuss the issue and request his intervention in it. “NSUI has also started an online petition with the same demands. The petition has been getting tremendous response from students across the country,” the statement said. Najeeb was last seen on October 15 in JNU. The student has been missing after his alleged scuffle with a group of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) students.

Meanwhile, agitating JNU students on Sunday formed a human chain from the administrative block to the vice-chancellor’s residence to protest the university administration's “inaction” in tracing the missing student.

JNU Students Union, which had last week kept vice-chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar and other university officials under siege for over 20 hours alleging inaction, on Sunday formed a human chain till the V-C’s residence.

“Agitating students.. Please understand, by shouting slogans and blocking entrance to my residence, we cannot trace Najeeb. We are doing all we can to trace the missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed. Now, agitating students have blocked entrance to my residence (sic),” Mr Kumar tweeted.

Mr Kumar who had earlier warned students of strict action if they resorted to “unlawful” means of protest.
