Seeking justice for Rajat Menon, residents of Mayur Vihar Phase III held a meeting at the community centre park on Sunday. After the meeting, around 1,000 people, including Rajat’s parents and relatives, took out a march.

In the meeting, residents formed a committee that will keep a track of the sale of cannabis and other contrabands by unauthorised vendors in the locality. It was alleged that the pan shop vendor, who killed the teenager, used to sell drugs in the locality.

“Locals have complained that the sale of drugs in the locality is known to the police, but the issue was never taken seriously by any concerned authority. Now, after this incident, the police and civic authorities have swung into action to stop the drug menace,” said Santosh Singh, a resident of the area.

Relatives and parents of Rajat also demanded that both the accused should be treated as adults. “We met the DCP with the request to treat both the accused as adults. He has agreed to forward our request to the concerned authorities for further action,” said Laxmi Kant, a relative of Rajat.

“Senior police officials have accepted the demand of the family members to appoint a special prosecutor for the case,” he added.

“We will approach the Juvenile Justice Board for getting its approval to try the minor accused in the case as an adult criminal in the regular court. We have already requested a bone test of the accused to ascertain their age,” said a senior police official.

The police has also decided to record the confidential statements of the other Kerala boys who were witness to the crime. The Keralite community in the national capital has also come out in strong support of the demands of Rajat’s family.
