A 52-year-old man died, while his 20-year-old niece was injured after being hit by an overspeeding car in southeast Delhi’s Jaitpur area on Tuesday night. After the incident, angry people torched down the vehicle, reportedly driven by a drunk driver.

The incident took place around 10.30 pm when Raj Mangal Singh (52) and his niece, Pinki (20), were walking towards their home from a clinic located in the Jaitpur area. “As they reached Tanky Road, a speeding Tata Indica car hit them and toppled on the road. The impact was so strong that Singh tossed a few meters in air before his head hit the footpath,” said a police officer.

The occupants of the car, who are stated to be four in numbers, got off the car and three of them managed to flee from the spot, while one, identified as Keshav Kumar, was caught by the passersby. They beaten him up and called up the police.

Soon more people gathered at the spot, who set the car on fire. The police reached the spot and took Kumar in their custody. Kumar claimed that he was not driving the car. He also told the police that there were three more persons in the car.

“We have lodged a case under relevant sections at the Jaitpur police station. The accused persons have been identified and will be arrested soon. They are suspected be drunk,” said the officer.

Singh, a BSES employee, is survived by his wife and two sons, who live in the same locality. They had gone to the clinic to get some medicine for Singh’s wife who is suffering from chikungunya. Pinky, hailing from Bihar, had come to her uncle’s house a few days ago. She has received minor injuries. She was discharged after treatment.
