A youth was arrested from Ashok Vihar area of Northwest district for blackmailing more than 50 girls by morphing their pictures that he obtained from various social media websites and applications. The victims were between 9 and 16 years of age. He used to send morphed objectionable pictures and vulgar, abusive chats to victims in order to blackmail them.

The accused, Rajesh Gambhir (29), a resident of Basant Nagar of Kishan Ganj in Delhi, used to send morphed objectionable pictures and vulgar, abusive messages through “WhatsApp” and “Facebook.” On Thursday, one complainant of Ashok Vihar area had lodged a complaint that some unknown person had sent morphed obscene pictures to her daughter on her mobile phone through WhatsApp. Her daughter is a student of Class 9 in a reputed school. On the basis of her complaint, a team was constituted for tracing the suspect.

“The accused had procured the SIM number on the basis of fake identity. The police team succeeded in tracing the accused. The team conducted raid at his house and nabbed him. The accused was found to be running a mobile phone shop from his residence,” said Vijay Singh, DCP, Northwest district.

“During the analysis of data recovered from his mobile phones, the morphed pictures of the complainant’s daughter as well as morphed pictures of other girls were found in his mobile phone. He was arrested accordingly. During interrogation, he disclosed that that he used to surf the profile pictures on Facebook by searching random female names and then saved those profile pictures. Later, he used to add the faces of such girls on objectionably obscene female images with the aid of cut and paste application on his mobile phone. Further, he used to chat with them and threatened them of consequences if they did not accede to his demands,” said Mr Singh.

During the scrutiny of his mobile phone data, it has been found that he had blocked approximately 40 mobile numbers that seem to belong to the parents of his victims. Besides this, his mobile phone has been found containing the details of more than 50 girls. It has also been revealed that he had been selling SIM cards of different companies from his shop and he used the identity documents of his customers for procuring SIM card numbers for using the same in the committal of such offences.

Three mobiles phones and the SIM card used in the commission of offence of this case have been recovered at his instance, said the police. The accused has studied till Class 10.
