Locals accuse cops of inaction
A large number of protesters gathered outside the Chhawla police station in southwest Delhi on Thursday evening and Friday morning shouting slogans alleging delay and inaction by the police in rescuing a girl who was allegedly abducted by two car-borne assailants.
The incident took place when two car-borne assailants tried to abduct a girl from the market in Chhawla area at around 9 pm on Thursday when she was returning home with her three friends. All the four girls work in a private company. “As the assailants tried to drag her into their Indica car, the girls tried to resist. However the assailants were armed and took advantage of the situation and took away the girl,” a source said.
“The two assailants dragged the girl into the car and took her to an unknown place. The number of assailants is not clear. In the meantime, the locals made a call to the police control room seeking help. However, when the police showed up, the assailants had already escaped. The delay agitated the local residents who gathered outside the police station and started shouting slogans against the police,” said additional DCP (southwest) R.K. Pandey.
The news of the abduction spread like fire in the area and more locals rushed to the police station and joined the slogan-shouting mob. The protests resumed on Friday morning with locals alleging that the crime rate had gone up in the area and that the police is not making locality safe.
Senior police officers reached the area and pacified the agitated protesters. However, the police has not been able to rescue the girl from the abductors and raids are being conducted at different place. “We are trying to trace the car in which the assailants were travelling. No one from the locality knows the abductors but we are doing our best to rescue her,” Mr Pandey said.
