Govt showers sops ahead of civic poll

Two months before the civic polls, the city government offered a gift to the SC, ST, OBC and minorities’ students as Delhi Cabinet on Monday decided to double the scholarship for them. The government will bear an added expenditure of `25 crores per annum and provide hefty scholarship to 70,000 SC, ST, OBC and minorities students.
“The Cabinet has decided to enhance the amount of scholarship to SC, ST, OBC, minorities’ students in Classes 11 and 12,” chief minister Sheila Dikshit said.
Students in Classes 12 and 12, scoring marks 55 per cent to 60 per cent,will get `1,620 as per annum scholarship while those scoring 55 to 70 per cent marks in Class 10 will get `3,000. The students scoring 60 per cent and more in Class 10 will get `2,040. Students scoring 70 per cent and more in Class 10 will get `4,500 per annum.
“This will help them a long way in realising their goals and find an honourable position after their studies,” she said.
Monthly pension for widows and aged persons in respect of SC, ST and minorities has also been increased. Pension of `1,000 per month has been raised to `1,500.
“The financial assistance for marriage of widow’s daughter has been increased from `25,000 to `30,000,” she added.
The government also decided to provide construction labourers an advance of `1.5 lakh instead of `50,000 for purchase of house.
The decision will benefit 65,000 construction workers.
