In an effort to cater to a large number of students, the Delhi government on Wednesday decided to run five of its schools in double shifts. The decision was taken by deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who also holds the education portfolio.

A senior government official said that there were more than 50 students in one class of these schools and in view of this, the government has decided to introduce two shifts. The five government schools, which will be run in double shifts, are SBV, Sector-4 (Ambedkar Nagar), G Co-ed SSS (Sundar Nagari), S Co-ed (Peeragarhi Village), GBSSS (Amalwas Jwalapuri) and G Co-ed SSS (Bindapur).

The government has provided basic infrastructure for double shifts in these five schools. “A few months back, the education minister had directed his department to find out government schools which were overcrowded so that they can be run in double shifts,” an official said.

There are around 946 government schools across the national capital in which lakhs of students are studying. The government will also construct 8,000 classrooms across the capital.
