In a bid to create a better health ecosystem in the capital, the Delhi government is considering replication of the “doctors on call” model of private hospitals and creating a pool of specialists in every district for the purpose.

Speaking at an event organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Thursday, Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain said, “There is no shortage of doctors in Delhi. We are thinking of dividing Delhi into five zones and creating district wise specialist pools. Each zone will have a hospital. Instead of deploying doctors permanently in those hospitals, we will have ‘doctors on call’ like in private hospitals.”

He added, “We plan to reassign the doctors, who are engaged in administrative jobs in government hospitals to service delivery jobs. The plan is to optimally utilise the space in government hospitals that are lying vacant and to avoid criminal wastage of resources. Air conditioners will be installed in all government hospitals.”

He also said that the AAP government will soon come up with a universal health insurance scheme, including accident insurance as a part of which accident cases will be treated free of cost, both in private and government hospitals. “In accident cases, time is crucial. Patients should be admitted to the nearest hospital by the police.”

The minister said the government will be using the PPP model for services like dialysis, CT scan and MRI in state-run hospitals. Clean drinking water, doubling of bed capacity from 10,000 to 20,000 by end of next year and getting the services of doctors above the age of 50 are some of the other measures the government is looking at undertaking.
