Question students, remain tight-lipped on whether more arrests likely or not

A day after the Delhi police arrested Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar after booking him for sedition for holding an event against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, the police raided several places in the city, including Munirka and Ber Sarai, and reportedly questioned a few students. No other arrest was made till late Saturday evening.

A case under IPC Sections 124 A (sedition) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) was registered against unknown persons at Vasant Kunj (North) police station on Thursday following complaints by BJP MP Maheish Girri and ABVP.

The police sources said that on the basis of the video footage they procured from media channels they identified a few other students also who were with the JNUSU president. “We have identified a few more students and are questioning them in connection with their role in the event that was organised,” said police sources.

The police, however, remained tight-lipped on whether more arrests are likely or not. “That cannot be said as we are taking our action on the basis of concrete evidence,” a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity.

On Friday, two policemen in plain clothes had come to the JNU campus and picked up Mr Kumar for questioning. He was later put under arrest. A group of students on Tuesday had held an event on the JNU campus and allegedly shouted slogans against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in 2013.

The event occurred de-spite the varsity administration having cancelled the permission following a complaint by ABVP members, who termed the activity as “anti-national”.

The JNU administration has already instituted a “disciplinary” enquiry as to how the event took place despite withdrawal of permission and said it will wait for the probe report before taking any further action.
