A 36-year-old Delhi Jal Board (DJB) employee was stabbed to death in northwest Delhi’s Ashok Vihar area on Friday evening. According to the police, the deceased, identified as Bharat Bhushan, was on duty and was returning after attending a call in the locality along with his two colleagues.

He was admitted to Sunder Lal Jain Hospital in Ashok Vihar where he succumbed to stab wounds he had received on thighs at 4.30 am on Saturday, the police said.

The victim is survived by his wife Seema, a son and a daughter, with whom he stayed in Nehru Enclave colony of Alipur area of outer Delhi.

On Friday evening, Bharat Bhushan went on a call with two of his colleagues, the police said. “When they were returning after attending the call, the trio took a private van. When the van reached Ashok Vihar, they had an argument amongst themselves over some personal issue after which they asked the driver to park the vehicle by the road to sort out the matter,” said a senior police officer, adding, “While they were arguing, two men on a motorcycle stopped by to intervene. Rather than being pacified, the three DJB officials got agitated on their intervention and started fighting with the motorcyclists instead.”

The police added that even as two parties were fighting one of the men on motorcycle took out a knife and attacked Bharat on the thighs several times and then escaped from the spot. “Bharat was rushed to Sunder Lal Jain Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries due to excessive bleeding,” said the cops, adding, “His body was sent for the autopsy.”

The police added that the victim’s colleagues were found to be drunk and it is assumed that Bharat was drunk as well, which can only be verified once the autopsy results are out. A case of murder has been registered at the Ashok Vihar police station and further probe is on.

Investigating officials said that they suspect it to be a case of road rage as the DJB officials did not like the men on motorcycle intervening in their personal fight.

“We are checking the CCTV footages around the area to find a clue about the assailants who seem to be locals,” said the investigating officials, adding, “We are also questioning two of victim’s colleagues who were present at the spot.” “Eye witnesses are also being quizzed to ascertain the registration number of the two-wheeler.”

A case of murder has been registered at Bharat Nagar police station and hunt has been launched to nab the accused, the police said.
