The Delhi government has ordered demolition of one of its school buildings while five other have been vacated after they were declared “dangerous” by the land and estate branch of the Directorate of Education (DoE).

Constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD), Kanjhawala Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Northwest Delhi was declared “dangerous” soon after it was constructed in 2012-13. According to a DoE report, cracks started to develop within two after its construction.

“The building is posing great risk to another building in the vicinity,” the report says. Approval has been granted for its demolition,” an official said on Tuesday.

Several other school buildings have been vacated and may be demolished to make way for construction of much-needed new buildings for the students, the official said. The order was issued on Monday at a meeting of officials chaired by deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia.

Another school in North-west district, which ran two shifts, have been shifted to another building after it was declared as dangerous this year. The Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Jahangirpuri was constructed by the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Develo-pment Corporation Ltd. in 2012.
