The daughter of a Delhi police sub-inspector, who was allegedly stealing mobile phones in Northwest Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar area on Sunday, has been arrested along with her accomplice.

The daughter of a Delhi police sub-inspector, who was allegedly stealing mobile phones in Northwest Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar area on Sunday, has been arrested along with her accomplice. She told the police that she was collecting money to exact revenge on her estranged husband.

The accused woman and her associate, Neeraj, used to drive a white Honda Brio after having removed the number plate of the car, said Milind Mahadeo Dumbere, DCP (Northwest).

“The 30-year-old woman used to target lone girls citing emergency on the roadside and would request them to allow her to use their mobile phone for a call. “She, along with her associate who waited for her inside the car, would flee with the mobile phone before victims could realise what had happened. They had allegedly committed a dozen snatchings in the last fortnight,” he added.

They used to operate in the areas of Model Town, Mukherjee Nagar, Maurice Nagar, Roop Nagar and the surrounding areas, said the officer.

In the wake of the rising incidents of mobile phone snatchings, a special team was constituted and vigilance was stepped up in the areas where the incidents occurred.

On Saturday, at about 8 pm, two cops noticed a girl and a boy in a white Honda Brio with no number plate.

“Suspecting something was amiss, the staff questioned the occupants of the car. During sustained interrogation, the duo spilled the beans. As many as 10 mobile phones of different makes were recovered from their possession along with the car involved in commission of the crime,” said Mr Dumbere.

During interrogation, the woman revealed that she was a graduate from Delhi University. She is fluent in English and she impressed her victims by the way she spoke.

“She is married and is in a strained relationship with her husband. She wanted to hire some criminals to exact revenge on her husband and she thought that by stealing mobile phones and then selling them, she would make quick money,” said the officer.

She has an eight-year-old son and her father is a serving sub-inspector in Delhi police.

The co-accused, Neeraj, is also a graduate from Delhi University. “He is married and has a strained relationship with his wife. He has a five-year-old daughter. He claims to supply toys and stationery to shopkeepers,” the officer added.
