For the past 10 days, Congress activists have been conducting an unique programme in all the 106 resettlement colonies of Kirari by distributing condoms, soaps and leaflets detailing advantages of a small and healthy family.

Local Congress leader Pratyush Kanth said the main aim of the programme was to spread the message that a small family is always a happy family. He said: “People need to recognise that if they have small families, they can easily provide a healthy and quality living to their children. All children need nutritious food and quality education which can be achieved by keeping our families small.”

Distributing condoms, especially to the young men in the area, the Congress workers also conducted street corner meetings to explain in detail the advantages of a small family. Not only this, the Congress workers are also advocating that the girl child is as precious as boys.

Mr Kanth said his party workers are also making fervent appeals to the residents to send their children to schools. “Illiteracy, poverty, unemployment, poor healthcare facilities and lack of confidence are the main reasons why people have several children here. Because of large families, poor people fall prey to money lenders and land grabbers.”

Kirari is the largest urban slum in the national capital. People live in inhuman conditions in the area and six to seven people can be easily seen living under one roof in tiny enclosures. More than 95 per cent people living here are migrants and most of them are employed as daily wagers.

Mr Kanth said the AAP government has not implemented even a single developmental project in this constituency. “Everyday hundreds of people come from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh looking for jobs in Delhi and many of them land up in Kirari. With no sewage system and stagnant contaminated water all around, it is one of the main reasons why people fall sick here frequently.”

While campaigning, the Congress workers also distributed soaps to women as a lot of adults and children do not wash their hands after using toilet. Mr Kanth said: “We also advise people to drink at least 10 glasses of water every day to get rid of toxins from their system, eat lots of fruits and vegetables to boost their immune system, cover their mouth before coughing or sneezing and seek medical advice if they get a heat stroke.”

The Congress activist said there is no hospital, police station, post office or even a marriage hall in Kirari.
