Fighting demons of drug abuse and gambling that is spreading like cancer in Outer Delhi’s Kirori area, about 500 young men have been training hard for the last one year to get jobs in private sector companies and the armed forces. What is notable is that 22 of them have already been selected for a two-year training-cum-stipend programme at Maruti Suzuki, Gurgaon, and nine are joining the Indian Army. Over 130 are waiting to join top-level private companies in Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru and other parts of the country.

All this has been made possible by “Winds of Change” programme which is being led by local Congress leader Pratyush Kanth and his team of 25-odd committed workers. Retired residents of Kirari are training these boys in subjects like English, maths and physical education and also preparing them for interviews free of cost. “I was appalled by the conditions here. People living in Kirari, especially the youth, had stopped dreaming. There was an atmosphere of hopelessness and despair. It is in these circumstances, that we rallied young Congress workers and started collecting resumes of young men between the ages of 18 to 25,” said Kanth.
