CCTV footage nails 2 employees in IGI camera thefts
The mystery behind the disappearance of cameras from baggage of passengers flying from Indira Gandhi International Airport has been solved with the help of CCTV cameras at the airport.
Two cases of theft were reported at the IGI airport police station. One Sumitra Ghosh, who was flying business class on January 22 had found upon her arrival in Chicago that her baggage was tampered with and a Sony video camera was missing. She informed the Delhi police through a mail. Another complaint was received by the airport police on January 14 from a passenger that the seal of his bag was opened and an Olympus camera stolen.
Investigators requested DIAL authorities to provide images from X-Ray scanners at the airport which confirmed that the complainants were carrying cameras.
The officials sought CCTV footage from airport authorities and on scrutiny found two baggage service agents employed at the airport opening the bag.
The accused, Dalbir Singh and Naresh Kumar, were found tampering with the bags while they were being loaded into the plane.
“Upon checking the register, it was found that the two were on duty when another passenger lost Olympus camera. They have not been arrested so far,” DCP (IGI Airport) R.A. Sanjeev said.
