The Delhi police on Monday arrested four men in Gurgaon and busted a gang operating a fake transportation company by pretending to be a leading firm involved in the business.

A team of Delhi police crime branch, acting on a tip-off, arrested the gang’s mastermind, Amit Kumar (28), and his three partners, Vinod Kumar (30), Deepak (25), and Shekhar Jawala (25), after a raid at Basai in Gurgaon, said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner (crime) of police.

Huge quantity of undelivered goods, including 150 cartons of household goods belonging to a Korean national, one Royal Enfield motorcycle, mobile phones used to call clients and invoices were seized in the raid. A truck used to carry goods was also recovered from the gang’s Gurgaon godown.

The gang used to lure customers by offering low rates and then withhold their goods unless they paid an inflated bill, including octroi, transportation tax and service tax, said Mr Yadav. Sandhya, a representative of Aggarwal Packers and Movers Ltd, had complained to the crime branch about a gang pretending to represent her company and extorting money from customers by charging them inflated bills.

The accused were contacted by officials of Aggarwal Packers and Movers to transport goods and two cars from a flat in New Delhi’s South Extension to Bengaluru, using numbers provided by their complainant customers.

Later, a man identified as Deepak, one of the arrested accused, collected an advance of `11,000. However, no one turned up to collect the goods at the given address on July 14, the previously agreed date.

A case was registered at crime branch police station. Interrogation of the accused revealed that the gang also ran a website using the name of the complainant transportation firm. Amit told investigators that he had taken over the illegal business from a Pune-based man Rajesh Bhambu. A raid was conducted to nab Bhambu, but he is absconding.
