Delhi Congress chief spokesperson Sharmistha Mukherjee on Tuesday said the proceedings in the Delhi Assembly have degenerated into a mockery as the short Winter Session was being wasted on unimportant issues, instead of conducting serious debates on the tabled bills.

“The level of political discourse in the Delhi Assembly has hit a new low as the Assembly session on Monday was squandered on Lalu Prasad Yadav hugging Arvind Kejriwal as the BJP and the AAP seemed to be hand-in-glove in wasting the Assembly session,” said Ms Mukherjee.

The party also said that the BJP has been keeping quiet on important issues like the onion and sugar scams, the forged degree case against former law minister Jitender Tomar, domestic violence case against former minister Somnath Bharti and the sacking of AAP minister for civil supplies Asim Khan for corruption, and is now going overboard on the Lalu-Kejriwal hugging incident.

Ms Mukherjee also said that two bills were tabled in the Delhi Assembly on Monday like CrPC Amendment Act and Time-Bound Services Bill but wondered how many people spoke on the crucial bills. “The Kejriwal government has opened up another window with the passage of the CrPC Amendment Act to clash with the Central government as proper procedure was not followed before the Act was passed,” she added.

“The AAP, which talks about internal democracy and transparency, could not tolerate the issues raised by its own MLA Pankaj Pushkarji in the debate and he was forcefully removed from the Assembly with the help of the marshals. What kind of democracy is this ” asked Ms Mukherjee.

The party also condemned the AAP government’s act of throttling an individual’s right to freedom of speech.
