In a major step to ensure security of small children studying in municipal schools, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to install CCTV cameras in all the 390 municipal schools in its jurisdiction. The EDMC has made a budgetary provision of Rs 4 crore for this.

A senior EDMC official said that the decision was taken by municipal commissioner Mohanjeet Singh to ensure safety of children. “Mr Singh directed the education department to install the CCTV cameras to avoid and check untoward incidents in school premises. The Corporation has floated tender in this regard and the process of installing the cameras will start soon,” he added. As per plan, around Rs 1 lakh will be spent on installation of CCTV cameras in one school. CCTV cameras will cover the perimeter of the school, classrooms, staff rooms, play ground and corridors. A monitoring team would be constituted in every zone and the EDMC officials at the headquarters would supervise security from the control room which will be set up at EDMC’s headquarter.

“With the help of electronic surveillance, officials will be able to keep an eye on the security of children and this will also come in handy in monitoring their movement during school hours. Through CCTV monitoring, administration will be able to keep an eye on the teachers to see whether they are performing their duty or not,” said another EDMC official. The EDMC believes that with the help of CCTV cameras, administration will able to ensure security and safety of around 2.5 lakh students in 390 municipal schools in East Delhi.

All the EDMC schools fall under its two municipal zones, Shahdara North and South. The Delhi government has also released a long list of recommendations for improving safety and security of children studying in hundreds of private schools in the capital. It suggested installation of CCTV cameras along with raising the height of boundary walls and taking attendance at least twice a day to ensure that students missing from their classes are noticed immediately.
