In view of the high alert sounded in the national capital, the Delhi police on Thursday heightened its vigil near iconic buildings, airport and Metro stations.

Security arrangements have been beefed up near prominent malls, hospitals, schools and colleges in the city, a police source said.

The move comes following increasing tension on the India-Pakistan border following the surgical strikes across the Line of Control (LoC) by India.

A senior police official said that all DCPs of various districts have been briefed, and asked to monitor suspicious activities in their respective districts. The police are also ensuring that CCTV cameras at all places with high footfalls — like popular markets and Metro stations — are functional. Patrolling across the city has been intensified.

“We held a meeting with members of various market associations in the city and asked them to ensure that all CCTVs are functional. During the festive season, all markets will witness higher footfalls. We are also installing watch towers at buys markets,” said a senior police official.

The police have asked railway police and staff at stations and tracks to maintain vigil. Gangmen and linemen have been asked to keep watch over their areas and patrol the tracks through the day. Bus stands will also be under security cover.

The Delhi airport is already under heightened security alert. Measures at Delhi Metro stations have also been reviewed,” a senior CISF official said.

Director general of CISF O.P. Singh met home minister Rajnath Singh and minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju. During the meeting, present security situation of the country was discussed. Mr Singh briefed the ministers about the steps taken by CISF for strengthening the security at the airport, seaports and other vital installations guarded by the CISF. After taking over the charge of the CISF, it was the first meeting of the CISF DG with the home minister and minister of state for home affairs.

Police chiefs of neighbouring states have been asked to be on alert. The Noida police with a team of ATS commando conducted extensive checking in GIP mall on Thursday evening.
