AAP legislator Jagdeep Singh, who represents Hari Nagar, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly assaulting manager of a waste management company, contracted by the area’s municipal corporation, and later granted bail. “Singh has been arrested under IPC Sections 323 (causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation and 341 (wrongful restraint). He was later granted bail,” DCP (west) Pushpendra Kumar said.

However, the MLA took to Twitter to claim that his arrest was a “rumour.” “I am at home its only a rumour,” he tweeted. Despite several attempts, he could not be contacted for a comment.

Mr Singh is the seventh AAP legislator to be arrested by the Delhi police after former Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar, Manoj Kumar, Surinder Singh, Somnath Bharti, Akhilesh Tripathi and Mahendra Yadav.

According to the police, the incident took place on May 21 when some locals approached the complainant, Mohit, for a truck to be used for Shab-e-Baraat ceremony and he refused. The locals then forcibly took over the truck, which led to a heated argument between them and employees of the waste management company. Soon, Mr Singh intervened and a scuffle broke out. He allegedly thrashed Mohit, who is the manager of the company.

However, the case was registered on May 23, two days after the alleged incident took place.

Meanwhile, attacking the AAP for arrest of its chief whip in the Delhi Assembly Jagdeep Singh for allegedly assaulting sanitation workers, Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay has said Mr Singh’s arrest has once again exposed the ruling party’s anti-sanitation workers, anti-social and anarchic character.

Mr Upadhyay pointed out that in this present case, Mr Singh who has been arrested for obstructing their work and assaulting safai karamcharis (sanitation workers) has reportedly been involved in similar incidents in the past too.
