The ceiling of a classroom collapsed in Delhi University’s Daulat Ram College on Tuesday, leaving four students with minor injuries. Following the accident, students and college faculty abandoned the classes to protest against the college administration.

The roof collapse took place around 11.45pm in the political science department of the college when a lecture was underway. The injured students were taken to Hindu Rao Hospital, police said.

“The ceiling of room 105 fell on four to five students. Four of them were rushed to a hospital for medical attention,” a student protester said. It is not the first time the students and college faculty have raised concerns regarding their safety. Earlier in July, students and teachers of the college had protested against the deplorable condition of the college infrastructure. Many classrooms of the college are locked due to safety concerns, the protesting students claimed. According to them, many classrooms in the political science department block are in precarious state.

Teacher group Academics for Action and Development (AAD) said the incident shows “utter negligence, apathy, misgovernance at the cost of the university statutes” by the chairperson of governing body of Daulat Ram College. “The chairperson paid no heed to the sorry state of the college building,” a statement issued by the teacher group said. The teacher body also demanded removal of the chairperson and said the governing body should be expanded.

Meanwhile, Daulat Ram Principal Savita Roy held a staff council meeting to discuss the situation, the college authorities said.
