Rain prevented a result in the third one-day international between England and Sri Lanka at Bristol on Sunday.

England, set 249 for victory, were 16/1 off four overs when rain stopped play.

A minimum of 20 overs needed to be bowled in England’s innings for a result to be declared, but rain kept falling steadily and the umpires abandoned the match at 5:30 pm local time.

The washout left England 1-0 up in the five-match series after their 10-wicket win at Edgbaston on Friday followed Tuesday’s thrilling tie at Trent Bridge.

Earlier, Sri Lanka struggled to 248/9 despite half-centuries from three batsmen.

Kusal Mendis (53), Dinesh Chandimal (62) and captain Angelo Mathews (56) all passed 50 but none of them could convert those innings into big scores after England put the tourists in to bat. Upul Tharanga added 40 from 33 balls down the order.

Chris Woakes took two wickets with his last two deliveries in his 3/35 and fellow seamer Liam Plunkett had 3/46 to keep England in charge of the series.

England lead the five-match series 1-0 with two games to play. The series continues with a day/night match at The Oval in south London on Wednesday. Scores: Sri Lanka 248/9 in 50 overs (D. Chandimal 62, A. Mathews 56, K. Mendis 53; C. Woakes 3/34, L. Plunkett 3/46) vs England 16/1 in 4 overs
