Upcoming Tata Hexa – Specifications, Features And Details

Tata Motors is working hard to transform its image in the Indian market. Tata is widely known for its commercial/taxi fleets but is now focusing on the passenger vehicle segment. After the success of its hatchback, the Tiago, it is now introducing the handsome crossover, Hexa. The Hexa comes loaded with features and a powerful engine. Let's have a look at it.

Exterior

The Tata Hexa is a good-looking vehicle. In the front, it has a masculine, SUV-like stance, complimented by swept-back projector headlamp units; the wide front grille and a fat chrome strip underlines it. The LED DRLs are placed horizontally above the fog lamps on the two-tone bumper. From the side, the large wheel arches and the 19-inch alloy wheels give the car enough muscle to make one overlook the length of the car. This means it looks more like an SUV than an MPV. This is further complemented by the roof rails, which end before the C-pillar. Another important part of the design is the partial floating roof, with a chrome line underlining the windows. All these elements come together to make the Hexa look tall, rather than long. At the rear, the use of chrome elements continues, with a bold chrome strip above the number plate. The short spoiler on the boot gate and the dual exhaust give it a sporty air. The bottom quarter of the entire body is wrapped in a plastic cladding, giving the Hexa a two-tone look.

Interiors The Tata Hexa gets nicely finished interiors. The all-black layout goes nicely with the overall look of the vehicle. The five-inch touchscreen unit in the dashboard works for the infotainment, reverse parking camera display and sending output to an amazing, 10-speaker sound system with a 320 watt woofer. Tata claims to have spent 1000 hours to custom tune this 10-speaker JBL music system for the Hexa. The steering wheel gets mounted controls and the instrument cluster is a two-pod set-up with a vehicle information screen in the middle. The vehicle also gets cruise control and an eight-way adjustable driver seat.

Inside the cabin, there are two very interesting bits. First, there is a round knob in front of the gear lever which lets the driver select between four drive modes – Auto, Comfort, Dynamic and Rough Road. What’s even better is that these 'Super Drive Modes' work in sync with the vehicle’s engine performance, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), ambient lighting and instrument cluster to provide the best user experience. Second, the Hexa's mood lighting (which comes in eight shades) and infotainment system can be controlled using one’s smartphone. One can also use smartphone apps to create music playlists, control navigation, read the user manual, and to book and track the servicing of one’s Hexa. This integration of technology with the car’s various elements gives the owners much better control over their cars.

Engine The Tata Hexa will be powered by a 2.2-litre Varicor 400 turbo-diesel engine. This is the same unit which is used in the Safari Storme Vicor400. This mill produces 156PS of peak power and 400Nm of max torque. This power will make the Hexa a good city driver and an even better highway companion. Also, the Hexa with the six-speed automatic transmission has a 'Race Car' sensing function, which adjusts the gear shifts to ensure that the engine stays between 3000-4000 rpm for maximum punch. The gearboxes on offer are two six-speed units, one manual and the other auto. The automatic gets Eco and Sport modes, whereas the manual is available with the four 'Super Drive Modes' – Comfort, Dynamic, Rough Road and Auto. The Hexa comes as a well-packaged crossover vehicle in the MPV and SUV space that has been monopolised by the Innova Crysta and XUV500, respectively. With the launch scheduled for January next year, Innova and XUV will have to up their game since the Hexa will target both their territories. Expect the Hexa to be priced in the Rs 12-15 lakh bracket.
