India-Bound Jeep 551 SUV spotted ahead of international debut

The SUV is most likely to be called ‘Compass’ and as expected, it looks like a baby Grand Cherokee!

The much-anticipated, all-new SUV from renowned American brand Jeep has been spotted ahead of its international debut at the 2016 São Paulo International Motor Show. The said vehicle is codenamed 551. After its world debut, the car will head for its homeland debut at the 2016 LA Motor Show. The Jeep 551 will replace the outgoing Compass and the Patriot (not sold in India) in the international markets.

Its Indian and the international launch is expected to take place in 2017. Why is it important to us Because this upcoming SUV will be the first made-in-India vehicle for the American brand Jeep, which has recently launched overpriced products – the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler Unlimited – that are brought to India via CBU (completely built unit) route.

Speaking of the design, the source said that the top-spec trim has been spied during an official photoshoot. Based on Fiat’s Small Wide platform, the vehicle shares its design cues with Jeep’s flagship model – the Grand Cherokee. Elements such as sleek headlamps and grille, squared-off wheel arches, wrap-around tail lamps are reminiscent of the Grand Cherokee. Also, you can say that it is a combination of different Jeep models! Additionally, it will have a contrasting roof, which will be separated by a chrome highlight. All of these features will most likely to be offered in India as well. Presently, we do not have much information about its engine and transmission options. Stay tuned.
