Korean carmaker Hyundai seems to be responding to the current market expectations with plans of launching an automatic transmission variant in its bestselling hatchback the Hyundai Elite i20. Despite glance-stealing looks, cool specifications and equipment, all it had absent was only an automatic transmission variant.

The competitors of the Elite i20, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Honda Jazz and the Volkswagen Polo GT, all sport automatic transmission variants. So, Hyundai’s move to introduce an automatic variant will further boost the sales of the bestseller, especially in the urban circuits. In the Elite i20, the Magna trim is more likely to get an AT, while either the Sportz or Asta trim may also get automatic transmission variants.

>Hyundai will probably launch the automatic transmission variant during the festive season, commencing deliveries around the same time. However, Hyundai will not bring in the AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) variant of the model as it considers the technology as an interim transient one. So, for now, the Hyundai will introduce only the manual and automatic transmission variants and not an automated manual transmission variant in their line-up.

The 4-speed automatic transmission will be mated to a 1.2-litre petrol mill that may be tuned to develop 83 PS and 115 Nm of torque. The Hyundai Grand i10 already has the same specs, connected to the same 4-speed automatic gearbox. The Elite i20 with the automatic transmission will probably carry a price tag of Rs. 6.5 lakhs (ex-showroom). However, the market also expects a diesel automatic variant from the Korean manufacturer. But on that front, nothing is still heard of from the Korean automobile manufacturer yet.
