7th Pay Commission: Benefits to be extended to central, state university faculty

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday extended the benefits of the Seventh Pay Commission for the teaching faculty of central and state universities and aided colleges.

The move will benefit 7.58 lakh professors, assistant professors and others, said Human Resource Development minister Prakash Javadekar. This pay revision is a part of the government’s initiative to retain good faculty and improve the quality of education in the country.

The revised pay that will come into effect from January 1, 2018 will reflect a hike between Rs 10,000 and Rs 50,000.

The scale-up in the wages is also applicable for other equivalent academic staff of higher educational institutions under the purview of the statutory education body, the University Grants Commission, (UGC), 329 universities funded by state governments, and 12,912 government-and private-aided colleges affiliated to state public universities.

The revision will register a pay growth in the range of 22 per cent to 28 per cent. It will be extended to 119 centrally-funded technical institutions like IITs and IIMs, among others, reported PIB.
