: The Mumbai Police has confirmed that singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, popular for being Shah Rukh Khan’s voice in the ‘90s, was arrested in July this year for his offensive tweets directed to a female journalist Swati Chaturvedi and was later released on bail.

Abhijeet was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by Aam Aadmi Party national executive member and spokesperson Preeti Sharma Menon, after which the police had registered an FIR against him.

Abhijeet had reportedly used offensive language against Chaturvedi when she had objected to his tweets terming the death of a Infosys employee in Chennai as 'love jihad'.

Menon tweeted that Abhijeet was arrested on 26 July.

Since the offence was bailable, Abhijeet was given bail. His son had signed the surety for the bail bond. Reportedly, his phone was confiscated by the police to be sent for forensic tests.

DCP (cyber) Sachin Patil as quoted as saying, “Abhijeet was arrested in July on the basis of the FIR against him for online abuse. However, since it was a bailable offence, he was given bail soon after the arrest.”

It is not the first time that Abhijeet has made controversial statements. His tweets when the verdict in Salman Khan’s hit-and-run case was announced and his recent spat with Sonam Kapoor had made news.
