Anthony Fernandes shines as Our Lady of Health triumph

Anthony Fernandes was the star performer and his brilliance helped Our Lady of Health Parish, Versova, emerge champions by winning the Veteran Men’s crown in the Dhoot Developers sponsored 5th All-Mumbai Inter-Parish football tournament for the ‘Orlem Super Cup’.

In the grand final, which witnessed an absorbing tussle for supremacy, Fernandes played a vital role as the Versova outfit got the better of hosts and firm favourites Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Orlem 5-3 via the tie-breaker after the match ended in a 1-1 draw. He scored in regulation period and again in the tie-breaker and then stood in goal and managed to make a crucial save which clinched the issue in favour of his team.

Fernandes, playing against the run of play, scored in the first half to put his team in front before Ryan D’Souza cancelled out the lead by netting the equaliser for the Orlem team and take the match to the tie-breaker.

In the penalty shootout, Anthony, Sheldon Fernandes, Arvind Naga and Jonathan Fernandes successfully converted their attempts for Our Lady of Health, while Our Lady of Lourdes could only score through Martin D’Silva and Conrad Rosario as Ryan’s try was saved by Fernandes. The sprightly Fernandes was later declared ‘Player of the Tournament and Ryan D’Souza was named ‘Player of the Final’.
