Mumbai: Former Kannada actor Monica Maria Susairaj failed to receive any relief from the Bombay high court on Thursday in connection with the Rs 15 crore cheating case against her.

Susairaj had filed an anticipatory bail application in the Bombay high court through advocate Naveen Chomal, contending that she was a respectable citizen successfully pursuing the profession of art teacher in Mysuru, and had no concern with either the complainant or even the accused Paromita Chakravarty.

Susairaj said she was an artist and had never done any business so there was no question of her cheating anybody in business.

A Mumbai court in 2011 convicted Susairaj for destroying evidence in the 2008 murder of television executive, Neeraj Grover. Following conviction, she served a three-year jail term. During her days in jail, she came in contact with one of the accused in the present case.

Justice A.S. Gadkari said that the vacation bench would hear her plea for urgent relief from arrest only if she deposited Rs 1 crore as security. To this, Susairaj’s lawyer told the court that she was not in a position to deposit such an amount, following which, the court adjourned the hearing on her anticipatory bail application till the second week of June without granting any relief.

The anti-extortion cell of the Thane police crime branch has declared Susairaj an absconding accused in the Rs 15 crore cheating case. So far, four people have been arrested in this case.

The bail plea read, “Susairaj has not met the complainant even once in her life. The applicant has neither any concern with the business activities of the co-accused nor is she aware of her financial dealings.”

Susairaj also claimed that the prime accused in this case allegedly cheated her father of Rs 1 crore in 2015, and her father lodged a FIR against her. The court will now hear Susairaj’s plea on June 15.
