Mumbai: Almost a week after the Pune police began an investigation into the Rs 94 crore Cosmos Bank hack, investigators have found that fraudulent transactions to withdraw money were carried out in Mumbai, Kolhapur and Indore in addition to Pune.

The money was withdrawn from ATM kiosks, from which, the police has collected CCTV footage for further investigation. The police said that the bank had learned that the malware attack to access the bank servers for executing the crime was carried out from Canada.

Following a malware attack on the bank’s system on August 14, the hackers transferred over Rs 94 crore from Cosmos Bank. The cyber-attack allegedly involved cloning of thousands of the bank’s debit cards over a period of two days. The transactions were carried out on August 11 and August 13 via at least 25 ATMs.

Apart from India, money is suspected to have been withdrawn from ATMs in Hong Kong and Canada. The core banking system (CBS) of the bank was not attacked and the malware attack was on the switch, which is operative for payment gateways of Visa and Rupay debit cards, the bank said following the malware attack.

The bank registered a formal complaint with the Chatushringi police station after the losses came to the fore.
