CM Fadnavis assures ‘solution’ for milk sector

Nagpur: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday assured the agitating members of various political parties that the crisis in the milk sector would be resolved soon. The crisis is regarding the milk producers not receiving adequate prices for their produce. He said that the continued pressure from all sides is urging him to look into the matter on an urgent basis. During calling attention motion moved by Sunil Shinde and 67 other members from across both the Treasury and Opposition benches, concerns were raised towards the financial losses approximately to the tune of Rs 450 crore, which were affecting the rural economy and the milk producers in the state.

Mr Shinde along with Opposition leader Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, Vijay Wadettiwar, Sunil Kedar, Prithithiraj Chavan, Ajit Pawar, Dilip Walse Patil and others wanted the government to provide adequate prices to the Milk producers.

Mr Shinde told the lower house that state was producing about 2.87 crore litre milk every day and about 80 lakh litres are sold in the open urban market while milk powder was being produced from 40 lakh litres of milk. The milk powder business is in crisis as despite the powder being worth Rs 150 per kg it was being sold at Rs 116 per kg in the international market.

Other price related concerns were also raised, which led the chief minister to intervene and say that the government was aware of the crisis and a meeting with the concerned stake holders will soon be convened, to which all the agitated members agreed.
