Pune: A Special Investigating Team (SIT) of the Pune police on Tuesday arrested two persons in connection with the malware attack on the city-headquartered Cosmos Bank in which a sum of over Rs 90 crore was allegedly siphoned off.

The accused were produced before a local court where they were remanded in seven-day police custody, said Jyotipriya Singh, deputy commissioner of police (cyber and EOW).

“This is a major breakthrough. All we can divulge at this stage is that two persons from Maharashtra were nabbed for fraudulent transactions in this case and that the investigation is progressing in the right direction,” said DCP Singh, adding that more arrests were set to take place soon.  

“We will not reveal too many details of the investigation at this stage as it is bound to alert other cybercriminals involved in the offence,” she said.

According to Cosmos Bank authorities, an estimated Rs 78 crore was withdrawn over a two-hour period using cloned VISA and RuPay cards in more than 12,000 ATM transactions in 28 countries on August 11. A further 2,800 transactions, amounting to about Rs 2.5 crore, were made within the country — which is currently being probed by cybersecurity personnel.
