Mumbai: The Mumbai crime branch has arrested an accused in a robbery case, who had more than half-a-dozen cases registered against him, after he fled from the Sabarmati prison in April while serving a life sentence.

Unit 3 of the crime branch received information that the accused would be coming to the Western Express Highway metro station on Sunday night, following which they laid a trap and apprehended him.

The apprehended accused was identified as Siraj Pathan, who had fled from Sabarmati Central Jail where he was serving a life sentence in a case of kidnapping and robbery.

On April 19, 2018, Pathan was being taken from the prison to the civil hospital at Ahmedabad when he managed to flee from the Gujarat police’s custody.

The lookout for Pathan had been underway since, with a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code registered with the Shahibaug police station.

Officials said that the accused had fled from the neighbouring state and after changing locations, had been in Mumbai for some time. “We received information that he would be coming to the metro station following which, we laid a trap there at around 9.30pm and based on the description shared by the Gujarat police, apprehended Pathan,” said a crime branch officer.

The investigators nabbed the accused and following verification of his identity, ascertained that he was the same accused wanted by the Gujarat police. Pathan has at least eight cases of narcotics, kidnapping and robbery registered against him by the Gujarat police. He will be handed over to them for investigation in these cases.
