Mumbai: One of the five persons injured in Tuesday’s collapse of the pedestrian pathway of Gokhale bridge — house help Asmita Katkar (40) — who sustained severe brain injury, underwent an operation and has been put on ventilator. She is likely to undergo an operation Thursday, provided her vital parameters turn stable. She continues to be critical. Another victim who is critical is Girdhari Singh (40), a daily wager.

Andheri resident Katkar was returning home Tuesday morning after dropping her son Siddhesh (6) at his school in Sahar when the bridge pathway caved in. Katkar was among three of the five who fell 25m along with the bridge onto the railway tracks underneath and sustained grievous injuries.

Both Dwarka Prasad Sharma (47) and Singh, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, were headed to their workspace near Criticare Hospital, Juhu, when the mishap occurred. While Prasad suffered injuries to both his legs, Singh sustained multiple fractures in his left arm along with abdominal trauma.

Dr Ganesh Shinde, dean of Cooper Hospital, said, “Katkar was operated Tuesday since she sustained multiple injuries including a severe brain injury. We have kept her on ventilator. Multiple teams are working to save her.”

“While both Prasad and Singh suffered injuries and fractures, they are stable. Singh is in the ICU. Those who may need surgeries or advanced management will be provided with the same free of cost,” Dr Shinde said.
