Mumbai: With heavy rains lashing the state vegetable prices are soaring owing to the damage to crop, say vegetable traders. The agriculture produce market committee (APMC) in Vashi stated that there has been a 20% dip in the supply of vegetables, which has led to a price hike.

While vegetable vendors claim that the prices of vegetables rise every year during Monsoon, this time the costs have doubled for some vegetables. “There has been less availability of products since the first heavy spell on June 26. Even the vegetables that are coming in are of poor quality,” said a member of the APMC committee.

For one kilogram of tomatoes the price has increased to Rs 40 as against Rs 14 kg earlier. Even the price of potatoes has increased to Rs 26 per kilogram. “The prices are expected to remain the same in the coming days. The supply from Pune and Nashik has been hit,” added the member. Meanwhile, traders are hoping that the good monsoon would mean better crop in July.  

“This happens in the initial days of the Monsoon, especially during heavy spells of rain. We are hoping more crop would be available this month and prices will dip again,” said Usha Devi, a vegetable vendor in Mulund Market.
