Major fire in plastic godown in Sonapur area, no casualties

Kolkata: A devastating fire broke out at a plastic godown in Sonarpur of South 24 Parganas on Sunday afternoon.Eleven fire tenders were rushed to the spot at Gerodanga. Local residents panicked on seeing dark smoke with flames leaping out of the godown at around 2 pm.Stocks of highly inflamable items aggravated the situation, according to them.

While the cause of the fire is not clear, the locals thrashed a youth accusing him of torching the gowdown. The suspect was rescued by the police and has been detained for questionning.

The workers were seen taking out the stocks to protect them from the flames. The godown was destroyed in the blaze within two hours. No one was injured in the incident, however.

Earlier a fire broke out at a shopping mall in Barasat of North 24 Parganas in the morning.At around 11 am thick smoke started billowing out from an eatery near the ticket counter of the mall at Dakbangalow More.

A movie was underway then at a cinema hall.The audience was evacuated through the emergency exit. Three fire engines were pressed into service. The situation was brought under control soon. No one was injured or trapped during the blaze. Preliminary investigation revealed that an electric short circuit caused the fire.

Later, Barasat Municipality chairman Sunil Mukherjee visited the mall.
